What is ASCP?

The ASCP stands for American Society of Clinical Pathology.

For Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) this is one of the governing agencies in the field and the one responsible for administering the test you will need to take to obtain your certification. There are other agencies you can get certified in but the ASCP is the national standard.

To be eligible to take this exam and become a certified MLS you must earn a bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university and complete a NAACLS-accredited Medical Laboratory Science program. Or pursue a post-baccalaureate certificate in MLS online with clinical practicum.

Now my title is MLS (ASCP)cm. The CM at the end of the ASCP stands for Certification Maintenance Program (CMP). This program is required for all ASCP certifications received after January 2004. If the ASCP was taken before 2004 the ASCP has no expiration date, but for the rest of us we aren’t so lucky.

To keep out ASCP title those who received their certificate after January 2004 must complete continuing education and pay a fee.
